Review of Manderlay (2005) by Alexi T — 26 Jun 2009
A follow-up to the movie Dogville, which I absolutely loved. This movie falls a bit short, and I think it really suffers from not having Nicole Kidman playing the role of Grace. The message I took from Dogville is that having power over other human beings leads to corruption.
The message in Manderlay seems to be that it's impossible to forcefully impose your way of life onto other people. I have to say that there's a lot to get offended at in this film if you don't go into it with an open mind, and it could be easy for anyone to take this film the wrong way with all of the sensitive racial issues at play.
It's not a bad film by any stretch, and there are certainly some very powerful scenes. However, it's not one of Von Trier's better works.
