Review of Manchester by the Sea (2016) by Gregory M — 22 Feb 2017
God, I am so agry! I don't know what it is, that makes me so angry about this movie! I hated everyone of the protagonists! I could't relate and I couldn't sympathise. Affleck's Lee was so difficult to like, he just was such an unsympathetic guy.
And I get it, the point is it was meant to be this way, but honestly I cannot overlook that. He is haunted by his past and he knows everything that's happening in his life is because of his past mistakes, but God I just don't care about this character at all.
he had a tragic backstory, he was responsible for tnat, so he is now struggling with his life. He better be! And, can we talk about the teenager that just lost his father, the only person that he was sharing his life with, and he never ever shows any signs of trauma! How am I supposed to get that? I know we all go through heartache in different ways but that was simply not enough for me? Am I too weird, or was that really unrealistic? I don't know what the case here is, I couldn't look past those points, I couldn't appreciate the performances much, or the direcrion.
I was just angry all the time. I may be too biased, I could tell at times that the movie dealt with post trauma and heartache in a fitting way, but it simply couldn't win me over. Affleck was a silent presence, a subtle presence, but as far as I'm concerned real, raw talent requirs a force of acting.
It's either me not being able to appreciate the silent, slower things, or me being too biased, or simply it just managed to strike a cord into me that made me too angry to keep a clear mind, but whatever the reason, I really struggled with this movie and I can't say I liked it.
