Review of Manchester by the Sea (2016) by James S — 11 Jun 2017
A deep and moving drama that has rightly been put forward for a number of awards. Casey Affleck leads well, and in his typically downbeat, emotional way. As our characters are introduced, we flick between the past and present, building our storyline in the process.
I say storyline, although a critisism could be that the plot is fairly non-existent. Whilst it is interesting following the characters, and learning of their difficult pasts, no main event is focussed around too much, so as to leave the audience feeling somewhat odd at the end.
The conclusion for example represents closing, although ends with a slight sense of "that was good, although what was the point". An interesting one to summarise, although a film I certainly enjoyed, and performances I believed were genuine.
