Review of Manchester by the Sea (2016) by Nicolas W — 22 Nov 2018
If you want to make a realistic movie, Manchester by the Sea is the perfect example to take notes from. The camerawork is subtle and lets the characters live in the frame. The dialog is not poetic, there's a lot of swearing and interrupting and you feel like these people would actually talk that way.
The editing is superb, taking a step back when it needs to, but enhancing some of the emotional scenes by mirroring the characters feelings. Now don't get me wrong, I love some good, old, loud ~ I drink your milkshake ~ acting, but I am so glad that an understated performance like Casey's won the Oscar that year.
All in all, I am very happy with Kenneth's direction and what he did with the story. The only thing I'd like to have seen more of is Michelle Williams.
