Review of Man with a Movie Camera (1929) by Eric S — 12 Oct 2009
The cinema of everyday life. that was what vertov, his wife and brother were caught up in. originally training to be a neuroscientist, he fell into a career in film, making some experimental films in the 20s, most notably this one.
it is a work that has no actors, plot, or characters. just people living out their lives. what special about this film is that its editing and the the idea that film should not be about fantastical subject matters, but about real human drama.
unfortunately, vertov fell into obscurity later and ended editing news reels for most of the rest of his life, but not long after his death, godard and a few others discovered his work which had a good deal of influence on them.
