Review of Man with a Movie Camera (1929) by Trevor R — 06 Feb 2014
I went in primarily for educational reasons (expecting to merely appreciate a nice bit of cinema history), but I was surprised by how entranced and affected I was. There's just so many beautiful and striking images, so many lovely sequences.
The editing is immaculate, but I feel it really transcends due to the literalness of the title-- We actually follow a cameraman going about the city; the recorder being recorded (It's unsaid, but really there's 2 men with movie cameras).
It's a subtle layer of meta-textual depth that I wasn't expecting to encounter. Anyone with an interest in cinematography or editing should see this movie immediately.
