Review of Man of the West (1958) by Daniel K — 29 Jan 2009
Another stellar example of the genre in its prime from a master filmmaker. Anthony Mann definitely knew how to make them. Gary Cooper and company all give good performances as well. The landscape and sets work on every level as does the story.
Many of the best westerns definitely don't have endings that are exactly happy and this is no exception. In this sense, the western is very similar to the noir. It's part of what makes both genres so effective and so powerful for me.
This is a spectacularly big picture. It is a simple story about a simple man and his struggles. However, it does pale in comparison to Appaloosa, which I just saw last night.
