Review of Man of Steel (2013) by Olivier B — 24 Mar 2016
Wow. Is the gap between the Critic score and the Audience score usually so jarring? For a 57% rating I would expect some sloppy CGI, some bad dialogue, cognitive leaps in the storyline that the audience can't follow, bad stylistic choices by the directors and cinematographers, mediocre acting, a "meh" soundtrack...
To my admittedly untrained eye this movie had none of those things. It weaved a surreal sci-fi story of a distant forgotten world, the character development and choices of a hero, and some incredible action sequences. I immediately went home and researched Superman. The comics? Wow. Now those are a mess - I had to stop reading summaries because Superman has been written in dozens of different directions with alternate universes, countless deaths and resurrections, a super family (including a superdog...I'm not kidding), a really smart, spoiled businessman as a main bad guy, and so much dramatic worthless crap that I wanted to throw up.
This movie - this synopsis of Superman - is a fresh look at a Superman of today without all the comic crap that's bloated this incredible character loosely based on Jewish history into the unrecognizable scrap heap he could've remained.
This is a fictional hero I can get excited about. All opinion, of course, but needless to say I loved this movie.
