Review of Man of Steel (2013) by Lewis S — 28 Mar 2016
This film made me a Superman fan! The only reason it gets a 4/5 and not a 5/5 is that I disliked how Clarks Earth parents were portrayed in this one as it felt that his real father had a more positive outlook on Clarks future as a hero of Earth, whilst clarks Earth father was more fearful of Clarks future, which seemed confused as I had always understood that it was Clarks Earth parents who had instilled his Great Moral Fibre in him.
Worst line ever 'What was I spose to do, just let them die' 'Maybe' - Clarks Earth fathers advise, says it all really! I still feel this movie deserves a 4/5 tho as it was the first Superman film I have ever watched that made me really like Superman and the action set pieces were amazing.
I loved that we got to see a bit more detail of Krypton before its destruction too which we havent seen before in previous films. I also like the ballsy decision (SPOILERS AHEAD) to have Superman snap Zods neck at the end.
It made sense in that this is a very inexperienced Superman, which also explains the huge destruction he is partially responsible for causing during his fighting with the Kryptonians. As I say I agree with this decision at the moment as this is an inexperienced Superman, out of his element and thrust into a fight he is not yet ready for, BUT I shall be keeping a close eye in future as I think it will be important to see a more veteran Superman in future sequels who is more careful about civilian casualties and is resolved to never kill again.
Basically we NEED to see that Superman feels sorry for deaths he caused, even if the civilian deaths were simply collateral damage. It needs to be clear in Supermans face in the sequel that killing Zod and all the collateral damage he has caused including civilian casualties whilst fighting Zod and the other Kryptonians has had an emotional toll on him.
