Review of Mamma Mia! (2008) by Ovi G — 02 Sep 2011
Fun, but like "Across the Universe," stories concocted out of independently written songs (particularly those of a single group) don't have the cohesion of a "real" musical. Most sucessful are the mass numbers with dance; least successful the solos, duets.
Streep is incredible as always, ably backed up by Baranski and Walters. Brosnan isn't up to the singing and his character isn't beliievable (who abandons his true love when told when he comes back after calling off his wedding with another woman and is told that she's out with another guy?).
Great setting on an idyllic island.
