Review of Mamma Mia! (2008) by Azia D — 03 Dec 2018
Mamma Mia! is a movie about a young girl, Sophie, on a mission to find out who her birth father is by inviting three different men that could possibly be her father to her upcoming wedding. Apart from Sophie's journey to find out who her dad is, her mother has her own story line that defies so many social norms in terms of the family.
The first noticeable aspect of the film that breaks family norms is that Donna (the mother) is a single mother who raised her daughter alone for majority of her life. They are a working class family in Greece, and Donna is a business woman trying to make ends meat.
She is a strong woman and mother, through out the whole movie everything she does is to provide for her daughter (her family). When the men from her past enter her life she rejects them because she believes that she does not need a man to make her happy or help her raise her daughter because she did a wonderful job by herself.
This movie focuses on women empowerment, while also touching on gender roles with men vs. woman and their roles in a family. I highly recommend this movie and the songs are a nice added bonus (which also tie into sociology and the family).
