Review of Mamma Mia! (2008) by Kevin M — 05 Aug 2018
What did you expect? A glamorous ode to the original musical? WRONG. This movie is incredibly dumb, horribly directed, and visualized all wrong. The movie itself is an insult to it's primarily female audience.
It covers up every potentially dramatic moment with immature slapstick, or a middle-school level joke that leaves me angry. The saving grace of the movie is supposed to be the music, but every song feels so forced and sounds like karaoke night at a bar with women in their mid-40s.
And don't think this movie is harmless just because it is a rom-com. It doesn't get a pass because it's meant for women. And if you think that's true, you are the exact reason why this movie is getting a sequel.
Women deserve better movies than this, and women have gotten better movies than this. If you want to watch a good rom-com, watch Silver Linings Playbook or La La Land or Blue Jasmine. But if you want to watch an obnoxious, disgusting, vile mess of cliches and sexism, then be my guest.
