Review of Mama (2013) by Super K — 21 Dec 2013
Well, there were only a couple things I knew about this movie before viewing it: there would be creepy little girls, lots of scares, and Jessica Chastain had a different hairstyle. I wasn't quite expecting an interesting story, though, and I'm grateful Mama had one.
The movie rarely bores, and the constant presence of Mama in nearly every scene increases the tension to a rate where you're on the edge of your seat at every other scene. Mama's reveal is less than stellar, but the way the ending breaks from traditional horror norms saves the film in the end.
Thanks to Chastain and the supporting cast, this is one of the most well-acted horror films of 2013 and certainly unsettling, but it won't quite scare your pants off - which, for me, made Mama a fun time.
