It isn't a good movie; but it was an important one.

Much of it is soapy and heavy handed melodrama; and yet some of that tin pan alley dialogue sounds like it did come right out of life. People actually do talk like this in reality.

The movie was in the early days of gay cinema - and with films like The Boys In The Band and The Killing of Sister George ahead of it, it was a welcome thing: a movie about dealing with accepting oneself and learning to like yourself and not apologize for who you are. It was a movie about the serious and real issues that gays of that era had. At least I did. It was a beacon of hope for every gay teenager of the early eighties, looking for guidance and proof that being gay WASN'T the crime we had been taught.

The cast is gorgeous, even with their big period hair; and the title song by Roberta Flack is haunting and wonderful.

Interesting trivia: Kate Jackson turned down the role of Mrs Kramer in Kramer Vs Kramer to do this movie. Meryl Streep took the other part and won an Oscar.
