Review of Magnolia (1999) by Michael C — 07 Mar 2012
Great actors, great characters, good story. I just felt I little disconnect between the examples of the "coincidental connections" they showed at the beginning of the film and the comparison to those people in the film.
yes, all of the characters were connected even though they didn't know it, but their connections didn't really have any barring on the lives of one another the way the stories they showed did.
and although I understand the biblical metaphor, the literal raining of frogs was a bit jarring. especially since the characters didn't really acknowledge how strange it was that frogs just suddenly started falling from he sky.
it was like the writer was trying to be deep and profound, but whacking your audience over the head with it may not have been the way to go.
