Review of Magic Magic (2013) by Adam M — 04 Jun 2014
Boring psychological thriller. When Two female friends go travelling one of them has to leave randomly and leaves her friend, Alicia, with two strange blokes and a woman. Feeling alone, frightened and paranoid, Alicia starts acting strangely to those around her as she starts hearing and seeing things and as time progresses her fears and behaviour get worse.
The problem with Magic Magic is it doesn't really go anywhere or say anything. Why is Alicia acting like that? What's the story with her best mate leaving her?(that's quietly explained but could've been developed further) and what's with Michael Cera's character? There are just to many unanswered questions and it's not weird in a cool way like Donnie Darko or something, it's weird in an annoying way, like you keep hoping and waiting for something big to happen but it never does.
It's saving grace, however, is Juno Temple who plays Alicia. After seeing her in Killer Joe I thought she's do a good job and I was right and this is mainly a chance for her to show off her acting skills and proves she can do "descent into madness" very well! So Juno Temple's performance aside, an annoyingly weird, disappointing film.
