Review of Thelma (2017) by Adam M — 06 Sep 2018
What a fucking weird ass thing. I walked out of Thelma just wanting to read an essay on it. This movie is constantly playing with your expectations of what is real and what is imagined. Strange imagery appears all over this film, usually revealed to be just in Thelma's head, until it's not.
It's an odd sensation when you discover something you thought was false wasn't. What is real, and what is in Thelma's head? What parts of this movie are artistic license, and which parts are in-story super powers? Is Thelma's father right about her relationship? Does she have control of other people, or simply foresight into their intentions? Do any of these questions even matter when everything in this movie might just be metaphorical? It's a film rife with symbolism, and I have no one to discuss it with.
Ultimately I think the message the film wants you to take away is that fearing something you don't understand can be incredibly destructive, but it was a hell of ride getting to that conclusion.
