Review of Madame Bovary (1949) by Darryl C — 30 Nov 2007
Jennifer jones was not always on her game as an actress. it may be because she didn't like acting. or, certain roles hit way too close to home for her. whatever the case may be, her emma bovary is not good.
but there are moments of greatness within it. and she is just too beautiful in those gorgeous plunkett costumes. van heflin is playing quite well against type as the well-meaning dullard husband charles and louis jourdan is one five actors from classic hollywood films that is allowed to wear riding breeches.
plus minnelli's waltz sequence is on a par with the great musical numbers of many films of the period. mgm didn't stint one bit on this.
