Review of Macbeth (2015) by John Eric D — 14 Mar 2016
This latest adaptation of 'the Scottish play' is strong, with Michael Fassbender's lead performance emphasising Macbeth as fallen soldier. But the real revelation here is Marion Cotillard as Lady Macbeth, who finally brings some humanity to a very dark character.
Her performance helps to subvert the play's misogynistic slant, as does the portrayal of the 'weird sisters' as seers, not stereotypical witches. Director Justin Wurtzel opts for a mixture of the raw and the stylised, which reminded me a little of Orson Welles' 1948 Macbeth.
My overall favourite remains Roman Polanski's 1971 version, by far the creepiest. But this new interpretation holds its own, both for its strong female presence and timely depiction of a world at war.
