Review of Ma mère (2004) by Mireya M — 06 Apr 2008
On the one hand I thought I had already seen it all in (French) cinema but this film proved me wrong: Mr. Marquis of Sade still has plenty to inspire to the screen so it's better to ensure a good director and casting if the idea is to portray the wild sexuality of the rich and powerful.
On the other hand it's a remarkable piece of performance on the part of the 17 year old son (Louis Garrel), who I think steals the show to Huppert, who in my view wasn't as powerful as him. Garrel perfectly reflects his conflict and prohibited desires thus gives the film some sort of justification to its trangressive, pathetic, decadent world.
