Review of Ma mère (2004) by Ryan K — 24 Aug 2008
Perhaps the most extreme of the overly-broad grouping which is currently going by the term "The New Extremism." This is a feat, since the films of Noe are hard to beat in terms of their brutal lack of humanity.
Bataille still shocks but the shock isn't simply one of transgressing moral boundaries; it is one which leaves you, the viewer shocked by how dead you feel inside and how insipid the characters on screen are.
This is not to say that Huppert and Garrel don't give an excellent performance, but it is one which focuses on making you feel nothing, completely empty; a performance that offends the very idea of mankind, where the only thing the unfortunate viewer has left to do is vainly wish they weren't human.
