Review of M (1931) by Frank V — 26 May 2014
Cinema legend Fritz Lang's M is one of the most moving, and chilling pieces I've ever seen. This film is about the wave of terror that sweeps across the city of Berlin, in the wake of a child murderer.
In response, criminals throughout the city band together to find and catch the murderer. Lang's direction was excellent, especially for his time period, It being his first talkie, I expected minimal artistic use of sound- and yet the sound still blew me away.
It's written nearly impeccably, touching on many dark subjects provokingly. The film becomes even more interesting given the time it was released- just before the rise of Nazism in Germany. Peter Lorre is incredible in this film, from his introduction whistling, to his utterly haunting ending monologue.
Lang has made a true masterpiece, one that has stood the test of time for over 80 years- and always will. Absolute 5/5.
