Review of M (1931) by Lauren J — 26 Jul 2008
M is a classic. It's brilliantly directed and feels ahead of its time. This is one of those movies that is a joy to watch because it's gorgeously shot (love the use of shadows), cleverly edited, well acted, and presents a compelling story.
The child murderer plot is so unsettling and is still shocking. The way Lang weaves the stories of the two groups trying to catch the killer is brilliant. I can't believe this was his first sound film because Lang's use of sound is better than most directors working now.
Who can forget that whistling? The editing of the police conversations and the street gang conversations over each other? This is truly a great film. I'm glad I finally saw it all the way through.
