M compellingly sets up a variety of conflicts: vigilantism vs. rule of law; compulsion/insanity vs. moral culpability; indulging mob hysteria vs. responding to public outrage. It's a film essentially about the function of justice in society.

It offers no easy answers allowing the viewer to come up with his or her own conclusions...I also want to add that the scenes whereby the criminal try to capture the hiding Hans in the attic were positively chilling, given the rise of Nazism concurrent to the making of the film, the Jewish heritage of Peter Lorre, and the fact that the Nazis later used the film as anti-Semitic propaganda.

This review of M (1931) was written by on 30 Jul 2008.

M has generally received very positive reviews.
