Review of M (1931) by Bernard O — 04 Jun 2009
A great movie with outstanding direction. Fritz Lang's camera angles and the composition of his scenes are part of Germany's late expressionist cinema's great legacy. Peter Lorre (before he escape to America) is a haunting lead, who unfortunately cannot shine in the first half of the movie.
The narrative is very grim and gloomy, the topic of a psychotic child murder a very brave one to tackle. It is very interesting to what extent the petty criminals and beggars of the city in question decide to hunt down the child murderer themselves and bring him to justice. But how can you bring justice upon a beast ?
Highly recommended.
