Review of M (1931) by Roswell C — 19 Nov 2009
Fritz lang was only limited by the technology of his time. but even so, it is absolutely stunning how effective he was with film techniques such as the use of sound, camera angles, lighting, extended shots etc. there was this one scene in which the camera seamlessly dollys across the street and through a closed window into a shop: amazing.
The whistling motif - a direct forerunner to the jaws theme. the insane murderer and ensuing manhunt - a direct forerunner to modern classics such as silence of the lambs and seven. this film has pioneered so many film conventions that it is staggering.
The actors were engaging as well. all in all, a brilliant film.
