Review of M (1931) by Michael S — 27 Feb 2012
This is one of my favorite movies and I believe it is Fritz Lang's masterpiece. While Metropolis may have the spectacle and the imagination, M is very subtle and dark and one of the greatest serial murder stories ever.
It's a talkie but there isn't a lot of music and that lends it's own eeriness to the film and the way Lang uses the camera and lights to enhance the shadows is just brilliant. Peter Lorre is very unnerving as the role of the serial killer, and it's a very subtle performance; he doesn't really say anything but just watching him watch or the way he moves like a snake it's really creepy.
If you like murder mysteries and don't mind the lack of color, then watch this and you won't be disappointed.
