Review of Lust, Caution (2007) by Jer R — 27 Aug 2008

Ang lee, tony leung, joan chen is the biggest names, lee hom wang is one of china's biggest pop male singer/performer... yet the star of the show is a little known tang wei . She not only steals the show but even overshadow someone as great as tony leung, which I didnt think was possible previously. her role is so believeable, going from an ordinary innocent young college girl to a spy interwoven during the japanese occupation of china in WWII. of course, alot of the film is known for its graphic nature. heck it is borderline porn and at times seems like ang lee just want to prove that he can be cutting edge about something. I wouldnt be surprised if this movie starts a sexual revolution in an otherwise reserved China. I also wanna say that the actress wei tang is better than zhang ziyi (the crouching tiger girl also directed by ang lee). she is hotter, in a non-hot sort of way. she's a better actress and can play a role that ziyi wouldnt dream of starring in. she also defines true chinese beauty, the type that doesn't require going under the knife... plastic surgery...etc. she is more attractive than ziyi in that she's mysterious and gets prettier the more u know her... whereas ziyi is more of a first look pretty type of a girl. I don't know why I keep talking about her looks but did I mention tang wei reminds me of my ex? lol. ok, it's fair to say she's my favorite actress in the whole world right now.

I'm also intrigued by the majong role in this film. in an essence, it is to majong what rounders is to poker...

Finally, lust, caution is actually a great piece of film, it is in my opinion the best ang lee film by far - even greater than brokeback...
