Eileen Chang only wrote a 28-pages long short story, and Ang Lee expanded it into a 22.5 hours film. I read the story before I actually watched the film and was actually skeptic on how Ang Lee would expand the story.
But it turned out the film stuck to the original story and he tastefully added some scenes that were not in the book.
