Review of Love & Other Drugs (2010) by Kerwin M — 06 Apr 2012
Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal are fantastic in "Love and Other Drugs", Edward Zwick's romantic comedy, that should have dispensed with the comedy. If this was played as a straight drama with some human comedic touches thrown in, it would have been award caliber.
The emotional impact of the romance and the plights of the two leads are extremely resonant. Unfortunately, it's subplots that feature Josh Gad, Hank Azaria and Gabriel Macht nearly that sink the picture.
It's not a total failure because the emotional scenes between Hathaway and Gyllenhaal are so well done (especially that emotional sucker punch of an ending, which will have you in tears). Too bad the rest of the film will have you groaning (and not in a good way, like the characters often do).
It you can look past the silly subplots, which is admittedly difficult, "Love and Other Drugs" might be worth a look if you are in the mood for a film that has a very powerful romance at it's center.
