Review of Love & Other Drugs (2010) by Lane Z — 10 Sep 2012
I was very satisfied to watch a movie geared for adults in the romantic category. You get two great acting performances from Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal. Both are fun to watch on screen and they have great chemistry together.
Everyone wants to live the live of Gyllenhaal's character, and it's nice to see him immerse himself in the role as someone who wants that job as well. Who wouldn't want to be in his position? I don't know exactly what other critics are saying when they say this movie could have ventured down different avenues outside of the traditional love story where the couple gets together, breaks up, then comes back stronger than ever. That's how every romance plays out in Hollywood (if even in real life it doesn't work that way) which is why they call it movie magic!
You get brief bits of humor that actually work throughout the storyline, but it also switches to a more serious tone and stays that way when it needs to. One thing I can agree with concerning some of the more negative reviews is we don't get to see much development time-period wise. It feels like the whole movie takes place in one week! But you know what, in the end you get a nice movie to watch that is much better than some of those rom-coms produced by throwing pennies into a fountain.
