Review of Love & Mercy (2015) by Ross T — 21 Jun 2015
Paul Dano and John Cusack create an amazing duet as Brian Wilson in the bloom of youth careening toward an emotional break and Brian WIlson a broken soul who is lost and trying to find his way back. Elizabeth Banks understated performace never hits a false note as a woman who is an emotional life line to Wilson.
The soundtrack is amazing and that from someone who has really never been a Beach Boys fan. The direction is smart and tight and the script avoids most of the cliches that burden biographical material.
It is too bad that this beautifully realized film is out so early in the year because Paul Dano deserves some awards season love for his portrait of Wilson as a tortured young genius.
