Review of Love & Mercy (2015) by Kevin M. W — 02 May 2016
Good Vibrations.
Love and mercy is unorthodox from many music biopics, it's structure is untraditional but follows the origins and the outcome of Wilson's character arc.
What really shines in this film is not only the music, but the acting. The standout is Dano, an actor who doesn't really ring a bell but leaves a lasting impression, immersing himself in the role he is playing. Paul Giamatti was also very good in the film in addition to Cusack and Banks. The editing is also well done going back and forth between time periods. Using film really gives the past an authentic and realistic feel for the time period.
On the negative side, the film felt too long and honestly contrasted to fell like two films. Most of the dialogue was very engaging but felt awkward in a few moments.
Love and Mercy is a strong biopic. It's unique and different approach is ambitious but though they may contrast they are still both halves of the same story and though it may seem long the acting, specifically Dano, keeps the film rolling.
Rating: 7.7 (B+).
