Review of Love Affair (1939) by Byron B — 13 Jun 2008
This is the original version of the famous "An Affair to Remeber" and certainly a nice film. I think Irene Dunne is very attractive but if we have "An Affair to Remeber" we don't need this film very much, I think.
This version is simpler than the latter. Most of the main dialogue and the memorable shots of "An Affair to Remember" can be seen in this origina version almost in the same way, but the version of Grant and Kerr has a more sophisticated touch, such as the famous line "Winter must be cold for those who have no warm memories.
.", and some additional scenes in the 1958 version are very effective for the storytelling (like the one in which Grant and his fiancee does the TV interview and Kerr and her fiance watches it on TV), and of course, the memorable theme song is missing.
And I think some similar scenes are directed better in the 1958 version. But if you are a huge fan of "An Affair to Remember", this is a must-see, it must be fun to spot differences and similarities between the two!!
