Review of Lost River (2015) by Robert D — 28 Apr 2015
When I heard this was written and directed by Ryan Gosling, I didn't know what to expect. It sure wasn't this surreal, Lynchian nightmare town that makes the one in "Gummo" seem quaint.
"Mad Men"'s Christina Hendricks plays a single mom trying to save her home and her children in a rundown nowhere town called Lost River because most of the surrounding area was submerged to make a reservoir.
She takes a job in a freaky, modern Grand Guignol club with sadistic, bloody entertainment. In between working out, Gosling must have watched a lot of David Lynch films. This isn't on that level, but it's not what you'd expect.
The soundtrack features icy, nocturnal electronica reminiscent of the "Drive" soundtrack. Silencio...
