Review of Lost River (2015) by Adam E — 07 May 2015
The wait for has been excruciating, in large part because of the wildly mixed response to actor-turned-writer/director Ryan Gosling's debut feature.
Gosling's influences are clearly stamped all over the movie and it's likely the movie's reception would be far different if Gosling was a first time director but whatever the approach, the truth is that Lost River is audacious. Some may hate it but it's bold and fiercely unique and thought the narrative doesn't always make sense (I'm still not sure I fully understand the basement activities Billy unwillingly succumbs to), it's not a movie I'll soon forget.
It's nice to see Iain De Caestecker in a substantial role (he was great on BBC's short lived "The Fades") and Matt Smith is a revelation but they're just touchstones in a movie full of outstanding performances.
I loved every second of it. Wish I'd had the opportunity to see it on the big screen. Cult status is sure to follow.
