Review of Lost River (2015) by Bean F — 10 Aug 2016
Ryan Gosling's directorial debut proves that the Hollywood heartthrob has what it takes to turn heads and drop jaws from the other side of the camera.
Clearly influenced by the likes of Nicolas Winding Refn and Terrence Malik, Lost River is a nightmarish natural fantasy, driven by nuances of detail as opposed to narrative precision and cohesion.
Every once in a while, Gosling's muddy film resembles a chilling trailer for a film that does not quite exist. But, for the most part, the cinematic noise hits all the right chimes, and Gosling's images and ideas crash loud and hit hard.
The result is a catalogue of indelible images, riddled with dread and dripping with fear; horrors which frighten solely due to their distinct ambiguities. In short, the film is strengthened by its own weaknesses.
