Review of Lost in Translation (2003) by Nathan T — 01 Feb 2013
Lost in Translation is only the third movie I consider perfect (Blade Runner and To Kill a Mockingbird being the other two) but explaining why is incredibly hard. This is a film that you really need to experience for yourself.
I say experience because that's what this movie is, an experience. The cinematography, mise-en-scene and music all come together wonderfully, creating a feeling that is sometimes mystically welcoming and at other s rather alienating, much like Tokyo itself.
The relationship between Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson is absolutely beautiful, two lost souls drawn to each other for friendship and comfort. The subtle body language and extremely well executed silences really sell the character's feelings.
Lost in Translation is a beautifully executed, sometimes therapeutic, diamond of a movie. My top 10: #7.
