A bit rough around the edges, particularly in the confusing and exposition laden first half, but once "Looper" gets the ball rolling it's a remarkably creative and intelligent sci-fi action film with a strong moral core woven into the fabric of the story.

This one went off in a direction I didn't see coming at all, becoming about the profound love of a mother for her child, of how such children must be cared for and cherished, as well as a fascinating critique of selfish individualism and an exploration of what choices and circumstances make individuals good or evil.

The acting is solid all around, but Emily Blunt, as usual, deserves particular praise for her work. Rian Johnson juggles multiple tones and a complicated plot structure fairly well, despite a few missteps, but the ambition of the film is both staggering and refreshing.

Despite its flawed first act, "Looper" is a powerhouse once it hits its stride, and it's beating moral heart lends a weight to the proceedings that most action films lack.
