Review of London to Brighton (2006) by Paul R — 05 Apr 2011
Gritty. Very Gritty. If you're looking for a Friday film to cheer you up - then this probably isn't one to watch, but definitely one to record. It's a superb, fast paced and dark British Drama about a chance encounter and subsequent relationship between Kelly, a prostitute running away from her pimp and Joanne, an 11 year old runaway.
Lorraine Stanley and Georgia Groome play these parts with tremendous realism. Their plan is to take a train from London to Brighton. The film is layered with flashbacks that reveal their backgrounds as we see their relationship develop.
Some great debut direction from Paul Andrew Williams - he does a stunning job. It's a challenging film to watch and deals with some uncomfortable subjects and storylines but this is by no means a negative.
Its thoroughly gripping and well worth a watch.
