This movie is getting judged pretty harshly. Yes it has a generic terrorist villain with generic terrorist motives, and yes the patriotism can be a little over the top at times. Despite that, if you enjoy action movies and don't think a movie has to be groundbreaking to be enjoyable, then there are good qualities too. The original cast returns, and the movie strikes a good balance between respecting the relationships between characters from the first movie and remaining accessible to newcomers. You don't have to watch Olympus Has Fallen to enjoy this movie, although I definitely recommend that movie. The plot has much in common with the original, but there are enough differences that it never felt like I was just watching the same movie. The action is on the border of over-the-top, but it doesn't stray too far. As opposed to the first film, Mike Banning (the protagonist) has quite a bit of help, so he feels less like a unstoppable action hero and more like a highly-skilled combatant.

Bottom-line: Check it out if you like a don't-think-too-hard action movie.
