Review of London Boulevard (2010) by Barbara C — 21 Jun 2012
William Monahan makes his directorial debut in this British Gangster film. Colin Farrell stars as Mitchell, a gangster who is just coming out of prison and would like to escape the life that he has lived.
He gets a legitimate job being a bodyguard for actress Charlotte (Keira Knightley), who seems to be having a nervous breakdown and refuses to leave her house because of the paparazzi. Mitchell though runs into problems when crime boss Gant (Ray Winstone) decides that Mitch can't just leave the crime business and must work for him.
Suddenly everyone he knows and cares about is in trouble. The film has a frenetic pace and Farrell and Knightley do a good job in the roles they are given. Monahan wrote a script in which the dialogue is attempting to be snappy but never quite lives up to his previous work, which was writing the great Martin Scorsese film The Departed.
In the end, it is a solid entry in the British Gangster genre but there are better films from Guy Ritchie and Matthew Vaughn that fit in better.
