Review of Lolita (1962) by Robert W — 23 Jul 2009
The film is two halves. The first half is near flawless. I mean the opening credit scene showing toenails getting painted kinda makes you cringe a little and all they show is a hand and a foot. The acting top to bottom is fantastic. Sellers is a scene stealer but Sue Lyon and James Mason are fantastic. I know other people didn't like her but I enjoyed Shelley Winters performance. The second half plays the same exact tone till the very end and that's the only real flaw in the movie.
I'm also interested to see what Kubrick had originally set out to shoot. He flatly said if he knew the restrictions before he set out to make the movie he wouldn't have made it. Can we all sit around, hold hands, pray/deep thoughts/meditate/etc to have that be in a box somewhere like the missing footage for Metropolis?
