Review of Lolita (1962) by Alice C — 17 Feb 2009
I think that adapting this novel inevitably makes Lolita appear as what she isn't. we lose of Humbert's subjectivity as a narrator: Lolita is said to be a "little demon" but through HIS eyes.
contrary to the 90s version, we do not have Humbert's voice over, we only see him as the protagonist, and this makes us think that the story IS what we see. the fact that Lolita's character is older in this earlier version (to avoid censorship) only adds to this impression that she is responsible for what happens.
