Review of Live Forever (2003) by Matt C — 15 Apr 2011
Like the Loaded and NME articles that it references this is very glossy but largely a very unsatisfying delve into the music of 90's Britain. If you didn't want to take part in the film then basically you didn't exist.
The Charlatans, The Verve, Manic Street Preachers and even Radiohead don't ellicit a single mention yet loads of screen time is given to people like Ozwald Boateng and Damien Hirst? The theory doesn't make sense either.
..Brit-Pop rose up with New Labour apparently, like yeah we know it pre-dated that but it was like a feeling you know...but then Brit-Pop died out with 'Be Here Now' released in 97...what? You mean when New Labour had just come into office? Then we have Massive Attack who were supposedly part of the movement (not really though were they?) so how do they fit into that theory? Mezzanine came out in 97/98 and is one of the best albums of the past 30 years.
The film is basically then, a mess, but on the basic level of some funny quotes from the Gallaghers and Cocker and some moody avoidances from Albarn it's worth watching. There is a great film to be made about this era of music, my era of music.
..but this isn't it.
