Review of Little Shop of Horrors (1986) by Jeff V — 29 Nov 2009
There are only three musicals that I like, and this is one of them - the others being Damn Yankees and Rocky Horror Picture Show. Moranis plays the loser well (I remember thinking "One of those hosers? Where's the other one? He'll never pull this off." But he does), exposing Seymour's motivations, moral dilemma, and eventual need to grow a backbone. Greene's character may be a bit of a stereotype but her vocal performance is amazing - there's one point where she actually squeaks. Martin and Murray play their roles well without taking over the film. Casting Stubbs as the voice of the plant was inspired! I think you'll find some of the songs running through your head long after watching.
The bonus material on the DVD is worth watching. It will give a greater appreciation for the film.
