Review of Little Fockers (2010) by Corey B — 27 Sep 2011
Dull, routine comedy that feels like it's been tinkered with in post production way too much. Stories just fade away, characters pop up for no reason (Dustin Hoffman), and the jokes are telegraphed a mile away.
The more and more the series has gotten away from the fact that De Niro was an ex-CIA agent the more dull it has become. Now, he's just a grumpy father in law.
I suppose the biggest problem I have with the movie, aside from it not being particularly funny, is that it's not really about all that much. Greg is having a little difficulty with his family life, but not enough to warrant a whole movie about it. Jessica Alba pops up as a flirting drug promoter, but there's never a moment where you think Stiller is going to cheat on his wife.
If the movie took a hard look at cheating a la Blake Edwards 10, or even made Stiller's relationship with his kids terrible, the stakes would be higher and the laughs would be stronger. As it stands, nothing is really at stake, so the movie isn't about anything.
