Review of Little Caesar (1931) by Jacob O — 04 Dec 2010
Little Caesar started the gangster film craze (followed soon after by Public Enemy) in the 30. 80 years old & even though a bit mincing @ times (basically because if the era it was made it) it holds up relatively well.
This isn't necessarily because of it plot or even the writing but because Robinson is so damn good. Edward G Robinson was born to play a gangster. His performance is legendary & his mug just screams thug.
Although the whole thing could have used a little more meat on its bone it's worth checking out for Robinson's performance alone. "Mother of mercy, is this the end of Rico?" Sadly yes & I wish they had made some more or had this one been a bit longer.
