Review of Little Big Man (1970) by George H — 23 Jun 2009
A truly unconvential western. Dustin Hoffman plays a fascinating and colourful character named Jack Crabb, who is 121 years old. The story is then told in flashbacks, and what a story it is! Not without humour and exaggeration, but also with gruesome details especially when describing the near genocide of the native indians.
General Custer (played by Richard Mulligan, yep, the one from «Soap») is portrayed as a raving mad lunatic, and compared to Custer the national hero of for instance «They Died With Their Boots On» this is a sight to see.
Below the surface the movie was also a not so subtle criticism of USA's involvement in the Vietnam war, most visible in the Washita Massacre scenes with its use of Asian-American extras.
Hoffman stands out in a demanding role, but there is also an excellent supporting cast.
