A once famous music hall performer now down and out is revived by rescuing a ballerina from suicide. Delightful Chaplin film about limelight, its bright and dark side. With autobiographical elements, this film feels intimate and more dramatic than previous works by its filmmaker, though Chaplin was always a poet even when he made films with his gimmick of the tramp.

In this film too he arguably wrote his best soundtrack. Among the treats of this film is a slapstick sequence in which he acts alongside another great of the classic slapstick comedy genre, Buster Keaton, and seeing them share the screen would itself have been worth the price of the ticket.
